The 2002 edition of the Town Crier, a paper that canvases the Mahoning Valley, had this to say:
A few years ago, the Ornelas family saw an opportunity. They knew that the smaller independent buyers for the neighborhood grocery stores were paying too much for their products. With their strong background in the grocery business and family ties to these neighborhood stores, they sought a better way to purchase. Very simply, buying in larger quantities puts the buyer into better pricing brackets. United Sales & Distributors Inc., (USD) would be the vehicle that would enable the smaller independents to purchase as a large group and be in the position to purchase in that “best pricing bracket”. Lawrence and his wife, Diana, began their organization in August of 1998. He had a background in grocery, sales and marketing and she was a medical technologist for an area hospital. They began USD to allow local independent grocery stores a competitive edge in buying both consumables and non-consumables.
Many distributors attempt and most succeed in forcing less than truckload pricing on the independent grocery stores and we want to give them other choices” he says. What began as a husband and wife team has grown into an office of 16 professionals who service the Ohio market. The Ornelas family intends to keep USD based in the valley.
They and their 4 children are happy residents of Youngstown and plan to remain in the Mahoning Valley indefinitely. “Local business is what we’re all about”, says Ornelas of his decision to remain in the township. “We recently launched our first brick and mortar showroom / retail location. This has been a long well thought-out process. We are very pleased to be able to offer this service to the store managers and the public.”
In December of 2013 United Sales & Distributors, Inc was featured in The Business Journal in conjunction with the opening of their showroom / retail location, Larry’s Drive Thru & Mini Mart. Click here for full article.
